I had a professor like this. He would keep up the questions with the relevance becoming more and more remote and the complexity more baffling until I had to admit defeat. However, one time, I completely cracked, and when we ended up in a discussion about motor control and Chinese calligraphy (the starting topic was laryngoscopic findings in someone with particular speech pathology) and I got the answer wrong, he said, "Why do you think that?" and I replied, "Sheer ignorance, professor. Sheer ignorance". He blinked, took a moment and said, "I admire your honesty" and actually moved on.

He still grilled me - but he did stop drilling quite so relentlessly.

So, is this the eternal way of teaching medicine or do you think the next generation will stop acting like Silverbacks?

Is this a needed method of teaching medicine.

Ummm...I feel obligated to say at this time: Penn State 0 = Notre Dame 20 at the half.

I stumbled onto your blog recently and am enjoying it. Imagine to my surprise when you mentioned brachial plexus today...I knew nothing about that plexus until I was forced to learn very quickly...as in obstetrical brachial plexus injury. Keep the writing up!

Enjoyable! Thanks for commenting on my blog. Uh, that was probably weeks ago now.

I'm pretty scared about clerkships and stuff (being one of those quaint med students who's never had patient interaction that you mentioned), but right now all I really can concern myself with is memorizing the brachial plexus, still being stuck in anatomy.

I often thought about going into med school growing up... I think the anticipated awkwardness of doctor/patient interaction was one of the biggest reasons I didn't.

And yes, actors take way too many bullets in the brachial plexus! I loved the bouncer bit though :)
